Our Neurologists

The neurologists at Suburban Neurologists, SC, diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system. This includes diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles. Some of the more common problems that neurologists treat include strokes, epilepsy (seizures), headaches, dementia (Alzheimer's disease), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and various forms of pain. Neurologists may serve as consultants to other physicians or provide long-term care to patients with chronic neurological disorders. Reiss participates in neurological research trials. Please ask us about research trials that you may qualify for.

Dr. Merrell D. Reiss

Dr. Reiss has had a long and distinguished medical career. He received his Medical Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and served a rotating internship at the Highland Park General Hospital in Michigan. Dr. Reiss went on to complete residencies in psychiatry and neurology at the Boston VA Hospital in Massachusetts, and served as Captain and Aviation Medical Examiner in the U.S. Air Force between 1957 and 1959.

He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and at present, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at the Loyola University School of Medicine. Dr. Reiss is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, and the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. He is on the staffs of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center and Northwest Community Hospital and, in 1990, he was named Physician of the Year by the Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

In addition, Dr. Reiss is involved in advancing the field of neurology by participating in clinical trials. He has served as principal and sub-investigator in studies concerning migraine Alzheimer's disease, headaches, epilepsy, strokes, and multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Reiss is board certified in Vascular neurology as of May 2005.

Dr. Vipan K. Gupta

Dr. Gupta joined our practice on July 2, 2002. He received his medical degrees (his M.D. and his M.B.B.S.; MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) in 1986 from Governmental Medical College in Amristar, India. Dr. Gupta then completed an internship at the UHS Chicago Medical School in 1992. He went on to serve a residency in Neurology at the Northwestern University Medical School, which he concluded in 1995. Dr. Gupta remained at Northwestern University Medical School to pursue a Fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology. When he completed the program in 1996, he stayed on at the school in a teaching appointment, practicing medicine and sharing his knowledge with medical students specializing in Neurology.

Dr. Gupta is on the staffs of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center and Northwest Community Hospital, and he is certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Vascular Neurology, June 2006.

Dr. Gupta's specialties include EEG, EMG and Botox(R) injections. Dr. Gupta participates in many neurological research trials. He speaks English, Hindi and Urdu.

Dr. Daniel Cacioppo

Dr. Daniel Cacioppo started at our practice in September of 2004. Dr. Cacioppo received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1997. He then undertook an internship at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1998, he entered into a residency program at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital. He remained at the Barrow Neurological Institute to fulfill the requirements of its Neurology Fellowship Program, which he completed in 2002. He is on the staff of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center and Northwest Community Hospital.

Dr. Cacioppo is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Vasular Neurology as of June 2006. His specialty is EMG and migraines.

Dr. Alkesh P. Patel

Dr. Patel is the newest addition to our staff, and a recent graduate of Loyola University School of Medicine. Dr. Patel initially received his medical degree, MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), at Kempegowda Institute in Bangalore, India. He went on to attend Loyola University School of Medicine, and continued his education, completing the Neurology Fellowship Program in which he became board certified with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Patel received his Vascular Neurology Board Certification in May 2009.

Some of Dr. Patel's research studies have been with a special interest in Epilepsy amongst other areas of the central nervous system. He will join the staff at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove, and Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Marilyn Young, MSW, LCSW

Suburban Neurologists, SC, also has an on staff Master of Social Work, Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Marilyn completed her Bachelors degree from the University of Illinois. She was employed at Lagrange Hospital as a Medical Social Worker while attending graduate school. In 1982, she completed her internship at Dupage County Mental Health. Marilyn graduated from the University of Illinois with her Master’s degree, and became an L.C.S.W. in the state of Illinois in 1990.

Through a combination of active problem solving skills, counseling, psychotherapy, and a cognitive treatment approach, she has helped to provide insight into problems either causing or contributing to emotional distress and/or illness, with both her patients and their physicians as well. Problems may include stress, post-traumatic stress, adjustment reactions, family, marital, or relationship worries, work or school troubles, anxiety and Depression, loss and grief, as well as, more serious and complicated mental illness and psychiatric disorders. Marilyn has continued to gain not only additional experience in the field of psychiatry, but has increased her knowledge and skills in the field of neurological disorders, especially those disorders with a contributing psycho-social component. She has worked with Dr. Reiss (this practice's founder) for over 15 years now, seeing patients with MS, brain injuries, headaches, Parkinson's, Dementia, pseudo-dementia, seizures, pseudo-seizures, anxiety disorders, conversion disorders, stroke, intractable pain, etc.

Marilyn has also participated in clinical research trials in Neurology. She has remained an active member of NASW for over 20 years now, and continues to remain an active member of the hospital's Allied staff at Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

She is available Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Call to schedule an appointment.
